Why only 30 minutes free Wi-Fi.HK service is provided by some organisations?

Wi-Fi.HK is intended for providing convenience to the public and visitors. We believe that 30 minutes free Wi-Fi service is sufficient for meeting the general Internet access needs. Therefore, as minimum requirements, each organisation has to provide at least 30 minutes free service to each user device each day. Organisations can provide service standards above this minimum requirement. In fact, some organisations are offering more than 30-minute free service and some provide completely free Wi-Fi services without time limit.

Is there any control on the usage bandwidth in using Wi-Fi.HK? Is the allocated bandwidth sufficient to support resource-intensive applications like 4K live streaming?

The free service of Wi-Fi.HK is provided by the organisations that have joined the scheme. The backhaul bandwidths (and maximum bandwidth allocated to each user if such limit is set) depend on the network configuration set up by the organisations and will vary among different organisations. Organisations can make their own business decisions on the bandwidth to be offered. Therefore, the stability and performance may vary depending on the environment and the location at which the user is watching on-line video.

Some on-line video services will adjust the video quality depending on the connection speed or provide options to users for selecting the resolution for optimal watching experience.
